Dhaka – A fire broke out at the headquarters of Bangladesh Bank in Dhaka’s central Motijheel area, firefighters said on Thursday.

Mahmudul Hasan, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters said the fire originated on the 13th floor of the 32-storey building around 9:30 pm.

Firefighters have been trying to douse the flame. The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately.

An official at the firefighting unit said they controlled the blaze nearly one and a half hours of effort.

Television footage show members of the law enforcement agencies kept the Bangladesh Bank building cordoned of as the firefighters from 12 units were trying to douse the flame.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhuth,  Bangladesh Bank Governor  Fazle Kabir and senior officials of the bank rushed to the scene on information that a fire broke out at the building.
