Dhaka – The prison authorities have asked the family of the war crimes convict Mir Quasem Ali to meet him in jail on Saturday afternoon as he decided not to seek presidential clemency over the death penalty, officials said.

The family was given schedule at 3.30pm to meet Quasem at Kashimpur Jail, a member of the family told local media.

Mir Quashem Ali, 64, a leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, was awarded with death penalty in 2014 for crimes committed during Bangladesh’s 1971 war of liberation from Pakistan.

He lost the legal battle as the Supreme Court last week confirmed the death sentence.  He had only legal option to seek presidential pardon, but he decided not to exhaust the option.

Quasem, who led wartime militia al-Badr force in Chittagong to commit crimes against humanity in 1971, is now kept at a condemned cell in Kashimpur high-security prison.

His execution is likely to take place at this jail as there is no legal bar to hang the condemned war criminal.
