Dhaka – At least 14 people were killed and more than 100 others wounded in yet another explosion at a commercial building in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, police, firefighters and hospital officials said.
The explosion occurred at a five-storey building on North-South Road near Dhaka’s busiest Gulistan area in the afternoon, shattering glass walls of the building and damaging an adjoining building, Deen Moni Sharma, a firefighter said.
A passenger bust in front of the building was damaged, injuring at least 30 passengers of the vehicle, said the bus driver, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the city.
Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said 15 bodies were brought to the hospital from the scene.
Firefighters were searching for victims inside the derbies. They will continue search operation using floodlights.
DMCH director Nazmul Haque said nearly 100 people were given first aid at his facility while 85 others were still being treated.
The building housed shops of sanitary goods on the ground floor, and private offices on the upper floors.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruk said there was no sign it was any terrorist attack. “We are looking into what actually caused the blast,” he said.
It was the third explosion in Bangladesh after six people killed in a blast at an oxygen manufacturing plan in the port city of Chattogram on Saturday followed by yet another on in Dhaka’s Mirpur road that killed three people on Sunday.
