EDITORIAL: Justice must for UNO

As we pray for the full recovery of Wahida Khanam, a government official, now in a Dhaka hospital after being seriously injured in a mysterious hammer attack in Dinajpur district we hope with all earnest that she will get justice.

An honest official, she might have become a victim of vengeance along with her father although law enforcers are saying it was burglary that went wrong.

The elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) did a good job by arresting at least three men, of whom have confessed to have committed the crime, and now we look upon these men and women in black to find out the real reason behind the gruesome attack.

Justice to the Unpazila Nirbahi Officer will give a positive message to her colleagues to work with honesty and the government is there to ensure their safety.

It is indeed another mystery as to why the Wahida Khanam’s official residence had no security men, despite a decision much earlier to ensure the protection of such officials working in the Upazilas.

The Home Ministry and law enforcers must work to ensure the safety of government officials as well as the general people.

We thank Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for ensuring the “best possible” treatment for this woman and ordering a probe to ensure full justice.

Wahida Khanam was operated on her head as her skull broke due to the hammer attack and has now gained consciousness, but still not of danger.

The attack has shocked the nation and we wish her a speedy recovery to render her honest service to the country. God bless her!
