Maha Sashthi puja was held on Thursday across Bangladesh in temples as the greatest religious festival of the Hindu community, the Durga Puja, got underway amid heavy rains and restricted rituals due to COVID-19.
On 17 September the community marked the Mahalaya heralding the advent of goddess Durga,
The five-day festival will end on 26 October with the immersion of Godess Durga in different water bodies.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted the country’s Hindu community.
Sheikh Hasina, in a statement said that Durga Puja is not only a festival of the Hindu community, rather today it has turned into a universal festival.
Pointing out that Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony, the premier added “We celebrate all religious festivals together being imbued with the motto ‘Religion for individuals, festival for all.”
Temples and puja mandaps are colourfully decorated as artisans are working around the clock across Muslim-majority Bangladesh.
