Dhaka – The Election Commission has been contemplating for a by-election to the mayoral position in Dhaka North City Corporation in late February next year.
Acting Secretary of the commission Helal Uddin Ahmed told reporters that the schedule for the election would be announced on the second week of January targeting the voting date sometime in late February.
The mayoral position in the city corporation fell vacant following Annisul Huq, sitting mayor, died on November 30 after more than three months of illness.
The election must be held within three months (90 days) after the constituency fell vacant, according to the law of the city corporation.
Annisul Huq, the ruling Awami League nominated candidate, won the DNCC election on April 28, 2015.
The voting to a total of 36 new wards in DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will also be held on the same day, the EC official said.
Both ruling Awami League and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party have been concentrating on the mayoral election, which will be held only few months ahead of the national election scheduled to be held after October.
Aspirants from both camps have started lobbying to get party tickets for the prestigious mayoral position.
