Death sentence for 6 JMB men reinstated in Gazipur Bar attack

Dhaka-The High Court has reinstated capital punishment issued by a Dhaka court for six Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) men among 10 in a case over a bomb attack in Gazipur Bar, court officials said on Thursday.

The HC also penalized two convicts to life term in prison and acquitted two others in the case.

The combined bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan issued the verdict following concluding hearing by both state and defence sides.

Earlier, the High Court fixed today to announce its judgment on the death references and appeals filed by 10 JMB militants challenging their death sentences in a case over a bomb attack in Gazipur Bar Association office on November 29, 2005 that killed nine people.

The ten death convicts were as follows:  Enayet Ullah alias Walid, Arifur Rahman, Moshidul Islam alias Masud, Saidur Munshi, Abdullah Al Sohaien, Nizam Uddin Reza, Taibur Rahman alias Hassan, Ashraful Islam, Md Shafiullah alias Tarek and Adnan Sami alias Jahangir.

All of them have been in jail since their arrest in 2005 and 2006.

All the convicted militants are in prison.

On June 20, 2013 Judge Md Motahar Hossain of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4, sentenced the 10 members of JMB to death for carrying out the suicide attack following completion of trial proceedings.

The death reference of the case reached the HC within seven days.

The convicts in the same year filed 10 separate appeals with the HC against the trial court verdict.

On November 29, 2005, suicide bomber Md Nazir Hossain, also known as Shariat Ullah of Gaibandha, walked into the office on the ground floor of the Hall Building-2 at the Bhawal Rajbari court and detonated the bomb strapped to his body.

The suicide attacker and two others died on the spot while six others died of their injuries during treatment. Of the eight victims, four were lawyers and four justice seekers.

The grenade attack was part of the JMB’s series of suicide attacks on the country’s judiciary at that time. The JMB men killed two judges of Jhalakathi court in a suicide bomb attack only two weeks before the Gazipur attack.

Sub-inspector Alamgir Hossain of Jaydevpur police station lodged a case in this connection on the same day.

On July, 4, 2007, after investigation, the investigation officer of the case, ASP of police of CID Ismail Hossain had submitted a charge sheet against the accused.
