
Dhaka – State Minister for Labour and Manpower Mujibul Haque on Saturday announced a small package of compensation for the victims of the explosion-triggered fire at a packaging factory in Tongi.
The minister said every family of the deceased will be given Tk 100,000 each.
Haque made the announcement while visiting the devastation at the Tampaco Foils Limited, a factory that produce plastic packs for wide range of consumer products.
The morning explosion of a boiler killed at least 24 workers and injured scores others at the factory. Fire engulfed the entire building immediate after the explosion at 6 am.
Firefighters have been trying to douse the flame despite the four-storey factory building completely collapsed.
The minister said his office will provide the deceased families with the compensation and ensure medical care for those who suffer injuries.
The district administration announced a Tk 20,000 aid for those killed in the accident to do the rituals. The authorities also formed a five-member committee to investigate the tragedy. The committee was asked to report back in two weeks.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock at the accident. They asked the rescuers and medical officials to intensify their efforts towards the victims.
