Church guard stabbed in Bangladesh

Dhaka – A guard of a church was hacked Friday by unidentified criminals in northern Bangladeshi district of Panba, police said.

The assailants hacked Gilbert De Costa, 65, a guard of Mathurapur Catholic Church in Chatmohor sub-district at around 3.30 am leaving him seriously injured, officer Ahsan Habib said.

The guard was rushed to Pabna General Hospital.

Police have detained three suspects for interrogation although they could not determine the clue.

It is presumed that the attack was carried out over previous enmity, the officer said.

Muslim-majority Bangladesh experienced a wave of attacks on priest, secularist bloggers, academics, foreign nationals, rights activists and people of the minority faiths by Islamic militants in 2015 and 2016.

A church pastor was attacked in Pabna’s Ishwardi upazila In October 2015.

None has claimed the responsibility of the latest attack.
