Dhaka – Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party has sought permission to hold a rally in Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan end of this month to demand release of its jailed chairperson Khaleda Zia.
A delegation of the opposition party met with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at his office on Tuesday to seek permission for the gathering on March 29.
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan led the delegation at the meeting with the home minister that lasted for nearly half hour.
The home minister told reporters that the government would allow the BNP to hold the rally at any suitable time.
BNP leader Nazrul Islam said that the minister assured them of holding rallies. He termed the meeting with the minister was a cordial one.
The party, which boycotted the last election resulting it has no representation in parliament, was denied permission for holding rallies in Dhaka on many past occasions.
In its latest move, the BNP sent letters to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and Public Works Department seeking permission for holding rally in the capital to demand party chief’s release. They receive no response from those departments.
Khaleda Zia was convicted in a graft case and sentenced to five years in jail for transferring funds meant for orphans to personal account. She was transported to Dhaka Central Jail after the conviction Zia Orphanage Trust case on February 8.
The BNP has been kept on announcing countrywide demonstrations to demand release of the party chief. The party has also been fighting a legal battle to get her bail from the higher courts.
