Biswal assures US support for Bangladesh’s counter-terrorism efforts

Dhaka – US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Desai Biswal on Monday assured Bangladesh of her country’s full support to contain terrorism in the Muslim-majority South Asian country.

The assurance came at a meeting between the US official and Bangladeshi Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan as Biswal arrived in Dhaka on a two-day official visit in the wake of deadly cafe attack in the Gulshan diplomatic enclave.

The attack by suspected Islamist militants left 20 civilians, mostly foreign nationals, and two security officials killed on July 1. The US, immediately after the attack, offered assistance for Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi home minister Khan said that US would provide Bangladesh with every-possible assistance to counter the menace of militancy. “We are making our assessments to seek their (US) assistance,” the minister told reporters after the meeting.

He said, “We need assistance in many areas.”

Ahead of the meeting with home minister, Biswal met with diplomatic community in Bangladesh. She also called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to discuss the latest situation in Bangladesh.

After the meeting with home minister, Biswal said, “I am here to offer US assistance and support for Bangladesh’s own effort against terrorism and violent extremism.”
