Bangladeshi woman stabbed to death in New York

New York – A Bangladeshi woman was hacked to death in New York on Wednesday, the second terrorist attack on a Bangladeshi national in less than a month, police and relatives said.

An imam of a mosque and his associate, both were Bangladeshi origin, were gunned down in New York on August 14.

The victim of the latest attack was carried out on Nazma Khanam, a 60-year-old woman who hailed from central Bangladeshi district of Shariatpur. She was stabbed the next block to his home in Queens of the cosmopolitan city and died at a hospital in Jamaica.

According to US media Khanam’s family believes her death could have been a hate crime because the victim was wearing traditional Muslim clothing when she was attacked.

Police did not give any clear picture as to why she was killed. She was reportedly walking ahead of her husband when she was attacked, according to family members.

Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce, who arrived at the scene hours after the incident, said there’s nothing to indicate this was a hate crime.

Still, the Muslim community in Queens has been on edge since the execution-style deaths of the imam and his association as they left services at an Ozone Park mosque last month.

The victim is survived by three children. Two of them live in Bangladesh; the other lives in New York.

The NYPD Muslim Officers Society tweeted about the incident, saying Khanam was the aunt of a city transit officer.

“lets catch the perp,” the group tweeted.

No arrests have been made in the killing.
