Dhaka – Viewers in India will soon be able to watch programmes being aired by Bangladesh’s state run television, a senior minister said in Dhaka on Sunday.

Information Minister Hasan Mahmud came up with the announcement at a news conference at his office as viewers have long been asking for an arrangement so that Bangladeshi channels are available in India for viewing.

“The final agreement to air BTV (Bangladesh Television) in India has been completed and a technical team will visit New Delhi from June 25 to 27 to settle the matter,” the minister said.

Once the technical team returns from India, the date of airing BTV programme will be finalized, Mahmud said referring to an agreement signed on May 7.

The newly appointed Indian information minister gave the final approval to the agreement on June 19, he added.

Another agreement has been done between Bangladesh Betar and Prasar Bharati to broadcast betar (state-run Bangladeshi radio) programmes in India, the minister said.

There is no restriction from Bangladeshi government to air the country’s private channels in India.

But it has become difficult as the Indian cable operators demand high fees to air the private channels, he said hoping that Bangladeshi private channels would soon be opened in India.
