Bangladesh has decided to purchase 15 million doses of China’s Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine as a mass inoculation in the South Asian country has nearly suspended with its stock of Oxford-AstraZeneca drying fast.
The cabinet committee on purchase headed by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal at a meeting on Thursday gave the go ahead to the proposal of purchasing the vaccine from China.
The cost of per dose Sinopharm vaccine will be 10 dollars, Sahida Akhter, additional secretary of the cabinet division, told reporters after the meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Bangladesh is likely to receive the jab in three installments each part containing 5 million doses in June, July and August, she said.
Both Bangladesh has China are poised to sign three commercial agreement to this end.
A country of 160 million people, Bangladesh earlier in November signed agreement with Serum Institute of India to purchase 30 million doses of vaccine developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca. But the supply was suspended after India required higher number vaccine in the face of serious Covid-19 infections.
With the limited stock, Bangladesh started finding new sources of vaccine, and eventually gets to finalise a deal with China. The Oxford-AstraZeneca does was at the rate of five dollars.
