Bangladesh on Tuesday reported the highest death toll from the novel coronavirus in a day amid a nationwide lockdown imposed to curb the surge in the virus.
The government’s Directorate General of Health Services in a statement some 258 people died in the last 24 hours compared to 247 in the previous day. Some 14,925 new cases were reported during the period, according to the statement.
The virus has infected 1,194,752 with 19,779 deaths since the pandemic began in March last year in the South Asian country.
Among the new cases 4,010 have been reported alone in the capital city of Dhaka. Thirty-nine out of 258 deaths were reported in the city, according to the official data.
Dhaka division reported the highest 9,203 deaths followed by 3,634 in Chattogram. Khulna reported 2,611 deaths, Rajshahi 1,527, Rangpur 973, Sylhet 704, Barishal 612, and Mymensingh 515 deaths so far.
The DGHS said 28.88 percent cases were found positive as 52,478 samples were tested in the past one day.
The recovery count rose to 10,22,414 with hospitals releasing 12,439 patients during the past 24 hours.
Earlier on Monday, Bangladesh logged the previous record fatalities and cases. Some 247 deaths and 15,192 caseloads were reported on that day.
