Bangladesh has reported the record 6,469 cases of novel coronavirus since the country traced the first cases in March last year.
The country also reported 59 deaths in the last 24 hours ended on Thursday morning, bringing the death toll to 9,105, according to a government handout.
With the new cases, the total number of infection stands at 617,764, the handout said.
Forty of the deceased were reported from the capital Dhaka while the rest in other districts. Age-wise, one of them was in his 20s, four in their 30s, 11 in their 40s, 13 in their 50s while 30 were above 60 years.
With the surge in the number of infections, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday called the people to remain alert and follow the health guidelines to slow the spread of the virus.
According to month-wise statistics last year, 51 Covid-19 positive cases were detected in March 2020, 7616 in April, 39,486 in May, 98,330 in June, 92,178 in July, 75,335 in August, 50,483 in September, 44, 205 in October, 57,248 in November and 48,578 in December.
The New Year witnessed a drastic fall of coronavirus cases in the country but the trend lasted for only two months — 21,629 cases were detected in January and 11,077 in February.
Sharp rise was noticed in March with a total of 65,079 people.
According to the government’s health services department among the total 9,105 fatalities, 5,192 deaths were reported in Dhaka division.
Chittagong remained in the second position with 1,645 fatalities followed by Rajshahi with 506 deaths.
Khulna reported 586 deaths, Barishal 274, Sylhet 325, Rangpur 376 and Mymensingh division reports 201 deaths.
