Bangladesh has reported more 77 deaths, the highest daily fatalities from Covid-19 disease amid a lacklustre nationwide lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The death toll from the virus rose to 9661 with the latest deaths reported in the last 24 hours ended on Saturday morning, according to a health department release.
Some 5,343 new cases were reported during this period, taking the total number of infections to 678,937 since the virus was traced in the country in March last year.
The health department release said 20.49 percent of the 26,077 samples collected in 24 hours were tested positive while the infection rate was only 2.30 percent just on February 8 this year.
The recovery count rose to 572,378 with another 3,837 patients got well.
The government counted the recovery rate at 84.30 percent and a 1.42 percent mortality rate.
Among the latest deceased 51 was from Dhaka division alone.
Meanwhile, the mass inoculation against the virus was continued across Bangladesh. More than 5.6 million people got their first dose as of Saturday while 218,026 people got their second shot.
Among the vaccine recipients 943 persons reported side effects such as headache, swelling throat and mild fever, according to the government statistics.
