Bangladesh reports 101 Covid-19 deaths in a single day

The daily death toll from the novel coronavirus has been continued to surge with 101 more fatalities reported Bangladesh, a health ministry handout said on Friday.

The ministry said 4,417 out of 18,906 samples were tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours bringing the total number of infections to 711,779 since the country reported the first cases in March last year.

With the record deaths reported, the fatality toll from the virus stands at 10,182. The previous highest 96 deaths were reported on Wednesday.

The government said 23.36 percent of the 18,906 samples collected in 24 hours were tested positive. The infection rate was only 2.30 percent in early February. The rate has started jumping up since March.

Some 5694 people recovered in the last 24 hours taking the total number of recovery to 602,908 persons. The recovery rate is 84.70 percent while the mortality rate is counted at 1.43 per cent.

Among 101 deceased, 59 were reported in Dhaka division. Sixty-seven of them were male and 34 women. Seven of them were in their 30s, eight in their 40s, 23 in their 50s and 63 are above 60 years of age.

Dhaka accounts for the highest fatalities with 5,913 deaths followed by Chittagong 1,828. Rajshahi reported 544 deaths, Khulna 633, Barisal 305, Sylhet 347, Rangpur 397 and Mymensingh 215.
