Bangladesh always ready to join UN peace building efforts

Bangladesh is always ready to work on peace-building efforts at any place in the world under the United Nations Security Council, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday.

“We are always ready for establishing peace in any corner across the world under the Security Council,” Hasina told a ceremony of International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers-2021.

The Prime Minister joined the ceremony at Dhaka Cantonment virtually from her official Ganabhaban residence.

“The road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of youth for peace and security” was this year’s theme of the celebration.

Hasina said Bangladesh wants to develop the young and youth forces as one of the key elements in establishing world peace, and they should know learn that peace is the only path of development.

Peace is the path of security, and peace is the way of people’s welfare, she said hoping that young members of Bangladesh Armed Forces and Police remained ready to face the challenges to establish world peace in the twenty-first century.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed and UN resident coordinator Mia Seppo also spoke at the programme.

The prime minister also interacted with the peacekeepers at various places across the globe through video conference.

She also unveiled a souvenir on Bangabandhu’s Birth Centenary and UN Peacekeepers Journal.

On behalf of the Prime Minister, the foreign minister handed the awards among the family members of deceased peacekeepers and injured ones for their sacrifice and bravery in establishing world peace.

Prime Minister’s Security Affairs Adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, Prime Minister’s Office Secretary Md. Tofazzel Hossain Miah and other officials concerned were present at Ganabhaban.

Bangladesh maintains friendship with all as the government wants to turn the country into a developed and prosperous one, Hasina said reiterating her vision that Bangladesh would soon be a developed one through keeping good relations with all.

Recalling the important role of Bangladeshi Peacekeepers on the UN Peacekeepers day, the she said the country is celebrating the glory of 33 years as the highest peacekeepers’ sending nation in establishing world peace.

She said at this moment, 6,742 Bangladeshi peacekeepers among a total of 80,184 peacekeepers of 122 countries have engaged in establishing world peace. In addition, 284 women peacekeepers from Bangladesh are also deployed in world peacekeeping missions, she added.
