Awami League postpones Hasina’s birthday programmes

Dhaka – The ruling Awami League party and its associates organizations have postponed the programmes chalked out to mark the 70th birthday of party chief Sheikh Hasina after the death of an eminent Bangladeshi writer.

The party in a press release on Tuesday announced the postponement.

The party and its associate organizations had chalked out various programmes to mark the day with various programmes like discussion meetings, processions.

It is learnt that Prime Minister Hasina, now in the United States, asked the party to postpone all the programmes.

Prolific writer Syed Shamsul Haq died on Tuesday after a long ailment at the United Hospital in Dhaka.

Hasina mourned the death of the eminent author.

Terming Haq as a conscience of the nation the prime minister said the country lost “a writer who was devoted to the truth while she personally lost one of her well-wishers at his death”.

“Syed Shamsul Haque has viewed Bangalee, Bangladesh and Bangabandhu as inseparable entities and through his powerful writings he showed the nation the dream of a secular country,” the premier said.
