The Asian Age newspaper on Thursday said it stands by its report on a financial scam and will fight the defamation cases filed against them by the complainants.
“We stand by our report based on documents with us and we are preparing to fight the defamation case lodged against us by the EXIM Bank and Nassa group,” senior reporter of the English-language daily PR Biswas told newsnextbd.
The Chairman of the Asian Age Editorial Board Shoeb Chowdhury was granted bail on Wednesday in two defamation cases by the two organisations for publishing a report headlined “ “Monster behind spoiling bank in October, last year.
Atiqul Islam, Magistrate of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Dhaka granted the bail after Shoeb Chowdhury sought in an appeal by appearing in the court.
Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, Senior Assistant Vice-President of the Exim Bank and retired Lieutenant Colonel Sirajul Islam, Adviser of NASSA group filed two separate defamation cases against five editors of The Asian Age and Shoeb Chowdhury last year.
The plaintiff Nazrul Islam Mazumder claimed himself to be the owner of worth 67 billion US dollars, Biswas added.
The senior journalist said in November 2019 the Joint District Judge 4th Court of Dhaka rejected a similar defamation case filed against the Asian Age Chairman and its Editor-in-Chief Jesmin Chowdhury, Editor-in-Charge Syed Badrul Ahsan, Editor-at-large Avirook Sen, publisher Al-Amin Chowdhury by Nazrul Islam Mazumder, Chairman of the Exim Bank and NASSA group and himself.
The Asian Age is known for its investigating reports especially against graft.
