Dhaka – A lawmaker of the ruling Awami League was sent to jail after he appeared before a court in central Bangladeshi district of Tangail on Sunday, officials said.

First Additional District and Sessions Judge Abul Mansur Mia passed the order after Amanur Rahman Khan Rana surrendered before the court in a case related to murder of local Awami League leader Faruk Ahmed, who was also a freedom fighter.

The lawmaker, who remained fugitive for a long time, entered the court premises at around 7.30 am to avoid his rival group’s wrath.

The court rejected his bail as he moved a petition to this end.

A court in Tangail in early April issued an arrest warrant for Rana and nine others including his three brothers in the murder Faruk Ahmed as the investigators found his connection in the killing.

Faruk Ahmed was shot dead near his residence in Tangail town on January 18, 2013.

Faruk’s wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case with Tangail Model Police Station against unidentified criminals on January 22, 2013.

Rana is a lawmaker from Tangail-3 parliamentary constituency. His brothers are Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti, former mayor of Tangail municipality; Jahidur Rahman Khan Kakon, former president of Tangail Chamber of Commerce; and Saniyat Khan Bappa, former vice president of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

According to the charges pressed by the police, Faruk, the then publicity secretary of Tangail district unit of the ruling party, decided to contest for the post of Tangail AL general secretary in 2012.

However, MP Rana and his family were against it as his brother Shahidur was making preparations to run for the same. Rana tried to persuade Faruk to quit the race but failed. The lawmaker and his brothers then ordered their accomplices to kill him, according to the police report.
