EDITORIAL: Be on alert as India likely to become new COVID-19 epicentre

As the world fights the COVID-19 and a race is underway to find a vaccine to stop it from infecting people, Bangladesh should re-arm and be on alert as its closest neighbour India is likely to become the new epicentre of the deadly virus.

India is reportedly is likely to become the new epicentre of COVID-19, leaving behind Brazil and the US amid a huge single-day rise in new cases of the fatal disease.

As many as 78,761 new cases of the deadly virus was recorded last Sunday alone in a country with a population of 1.3 billion as the pathogen is now gripping the countryside.

In Bangladesh itself, the scenario has not improved with reports indicating a similar trend of COVID-19 pushing into the countryside as more and more people are commuting giving up almost all necessary measures to be safe from the virus.

On Thursday alone, 2,174 new cases were detected with 33 deaths.

We must be cautious across our land border with India as well as products being transhipped to its north-eastern parts by train through Bangladesh.

The opening of airline operations must be delayed as any hurry could cost Bangladesh dearly with its fragile and corrupt health sector.

It is the economy that all government are trying to put back in order due to rising unemployment and companies going bankrupt.

Let us not be complacent and take immediate measures to ensure a strict ban on travel between the people of both the countries.
