The whole world is racing to get the benefit of the first vaccine to save its people and the economy, and an optimistic Bangladesh has finally approved the human trial of a Covid-19 vaccine developed by a Chinese company.
The Phase-III trial of a vaccine means it is at the final stage when doses are applied on thousands of people.
Dhaka has requested Beijing that it hopes once the World Health Organisation approved the vaccine it should be among the first to get it. The WHO must not fail in saving people by getting vaccines urgently as it did in alerting the world about COVID-19 situation in Wuan as many believe it ot could be contained within China then the world would still be a safer place.
We hope that the vaccine and our optimism on the hope of getting the vaccine at its earliest becomes a reality.
The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B), and Sinovac Research and Development Limited, the Chinese company, will jointly conduct the 18-month trial on a select group of health workers who will volunteer to undergo the test in Dhaka-based hospitals.
In July, the health ministry gave its “ethical approval” for final or phase-3 human trial of a COVID-19 vaccine by Sinovac Biotech Ltd. on the priority list.
However, it will be wise to keep a look out for other vaccines in Russia or Oxford that might hit the market earlier than the one by Sinovac.
Good luck to ICDDR,B and Sinovac Research Development Limited.
