Dhaka – Investigators have taken three suspected criminals into custody for a lengthy sessions of interrogation in a case related to explosion at a police station in Dhaka that left four policemen wounded, officials said on Thursday.
A magistrate court in Dhaka granted the investigators’ plea for custodial interrogation of each of the suspects for 14 days to unearth more information about their activities.
An explosion of a weight machine occurred at the office room of the Pallabi police station on Wednesday morning after the police arrested the suspects – Shahidul Islam (23), Mosharraf Hossain (26), and Rafiqul Islam (40). Police claimed they also recovered the device along with two firearms from their possessions.
But family of Rafiqul Islam, a local contractor and one of the suspects, claimed that Islam was picked up from his home more than two days before he was shown arrested by the police station. A police spokesman also assured that the claim would be investigated.
As the suspects were produced before the court, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mainul Islam granted the investigators plea for their custodial interrogation. The court ordered the suspects to be remanded in custody for two weeks.
Officer Md Farukuzzaman, a sub-inspector of Pallabi Police Station and also the investigation officer of the cases, however pleaded for 20-days of custodial interrogation.
He said the accused were directly involved with possessing firearms and explosives.
Defence lwayers submitted separate petitions seeking cancellation of the remand prayers. The petitions were rejected.
Police earlier said they raided a place in Kalshi area of Mirpur on Tuesday and arrested the three acting on information that they might plotting criminal activities in the areas.
Police, however, turned down that the explosion was related to any terrorist attack.
