Dhaka – Two police officers were killed in gunfight between law enforcement and armed men who take hostage several people, including foreign nationals, at a restaurant in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.
The officers, Salahuddin Ahmed and Rabiul Islam, sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight died at a private hospital near the restaurant, said police spokesman Sheikh Nazmul Alam.
At least 20 others who sustained injuries in attacks by the gunmen, who also reportedly threw hand grenades, are undergoing treatment at private-run United Hospital and state-run Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The security forces have been chalking out strategies to launch and operation into the restaurant. It was not clear whether any of the hostage-taker were injured.
At least 20 people were having dinner at the Holey Artisan Bakery restaurant at the time the gunmen entered into it chanting Muslims Allah hu Akbar (God is great) slogan. They fired guns indiscriminately when the lawmen tried to encounter them.
