Dhaka – More than half of patients who contacted the novel coronavirus have recovered as the health officials said the number of total infection nears 200,000 in Bangladesh.

With some 1,762 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, the recovery count stands at 1, 08,725, said Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the government health services said on Friday.

She said 51 more patients died during the period, raising the toll from the virus to 2,547. The total number of infection rose to 199,357 with 3,034 fresh infections, she added.  

The health official also informed that a total of 13,860 samples were tested at 80 authorized laboratories across the country during the last 24 hours.

Among the total infections, 54.54 percent patients have recovered, while 1.28 percent died so far since the first COVID-19 positive cases were reported in the country on March 8, she said.

Bangladesh confirmed the first coronavirus death on March 18.

Globally, over 13.81 million people have been infected by the coronavirus and 590,005 have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
