Dhaka – The government will continue its drive against corruption and irregularities irrespective of political affiliations of those involved in grafts at every level.

Prime Minister Sheik Hasina made this remarks while delivering winding up speech at the budget session of parliament on Thursday. The remarks came amid reports of endemic corruption emerged during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The government this week sealed off a hospital in Dhaka for issuing fake reports on novel coronavirus and taking exorbitant fees from the patients.

“We have been trying our best to check corruption and irregularities since the Awami League assumed office,” the Prime Minister said referring to her efforts in the past years as she blamed successive military dictatorships that ran the country after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Hasina vowed to continue the drives against the menaces saying “we cannot tolerate those anymore.”.

It doesn’t matter who belongs to which party the corrupt elements have been captured irrespective of their political beliefs, she said.

Opposition lawmakers raised the issue of corruption in parliament as they were delivering statement on the concluding session of the parliament.

The session, started in early June, dealt with the passage of the national budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2020-’21.

In response to the opposition lawmakers saying her government takes actions whenever any news relating to irregularities refaced in the media.

She, however, expressed her dismay that some people have been making attempts to brand her government a corrupt one as the authorities are capturing the corrupt elements.

Hasina added that the character of the people had been destroyed by the military regimes which came to the power after the August 15, 1975 bloody carnage.

Military dictators have taught the people from top to bottom how to be corrupt, earn black money and be loan defaulters just to cling to the power, she said.

It would be tougher to eliminate corruption and irregularities completely from the society as it had got institutional shape during the dictatorial ruses years after years.
