Bangladesh’s virus death toll nears 2,000

Dhaka – Nearly 2,000 people died of novel coronavirus in Bangladesh in less than four months after the first three cases were reported in early March, according to official counts.

The toll has risen to 1,997 with 29 people reportedly died of the virus in the last 24 hours ended on Saturday morning, said Nasima Sultana, the additional director general of the Bangladesh’s health services directorate.

Sultana said some 3,288 new cases have been reported during the time, raising the total number of Covid-19 patients to 159,679. A total of 14,727 samples were tested at 63 authorised laboratories across the country during the time.

Some 70,721 people have so far recovered, she said adding that 3,288 patients who were undergoing treatment at their respective homes and hospitals were recovered in the last 24 hours.

The recovery rate is 44.29 percent while the death rate is 1.25 percent.

Bangladesh reported the first cases of the deadly virus on March 8, and the first death on March 18.
