Bangladesh reports record 4,014 single-day Covid-19 cases

Dhaka – Bangladesh has reported 45 more deaths from the novel coronavirus, raising the toll to 1,783, a health official said on Monday.

Some 4,014 fresh cases were found after conducting tests on 17,837 samples in the last 24 hours ended on Monday morning, said Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the health services, said.

This was the highest infection in a day since Bangladesh reported the first three cases of novel coronavirus on March 8. With the fresh infections, the total number of Covid-19 patients rose to 141,801 in the South Asian country.

The official added the recovery count rose to 57,780 after condition of 2,053 patients improved in the past 24 hours. She said the recovery rate is 40.75 per cent while the death rate was 1.26 per cent.

Sultana said the number of bed and intensive care units to treat the patients in hospital are enough. There are 6,015 beds and 134 ICUs in 16 COVID-19 dedicated hospitals in Dhaka city, she added.

A total of 2,375 coronavirus patients have been admitted to these hospitals, while 97 patients remain at the ICUs, said adding that there are 14,690 beds and 354 ICUs in the country. Nationwide 4,881 patients are undergoing treatment at these hospitals and 213 were admitted to the ICUs.

Sultana urged the people to abide by health rules to protect them from the infection.

Referring to the latest health directives of the World Health Organization (WHO), the health official said the people must wear masks to protect them.

Scientifically cloth-made mask is equally effective to prevent the virus, she added.

Among the 45 deaths, 36 are male and nine female, Sultana said adding, two are in their 20s, three in their 30s, seven in their 40s, 11 in their 50s, 14 in their 60s, six in their 70s, one in his 80s and one in his 90s.
