Dhaka – The government has been planning for making railway sector a profit making organization through modernization of Bangladesh Railway, a senior minister said on Tuesday.

As part of its plan, Bangladesh Railway will decentralize its ticketing system with initially setting up 11 counters in different parts of the capital Dhaka, railway minister Nurul Islam Sujon said.

Replying to a question from opposition chip whip Mashiur Rahman Ranga, the minister disclosed the government’s plans in parliament as its sitting resumed in the morning with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Choudhury in the chair.

The questions were tabled in the House to expedite the discussion on national budget for 2020-21.

The minister said the government has decided to make the railway a profitmaking, modern and popular entity. As per the decision, the railway will now set up more ticket counters in the cities and divisional headquarters for better serving the people.

Initially, 11 places have earmarked in the capital Dhaka.

He said the railway is now issuing only online-tickets to ensure social distancing during the global pandemic of novel coronavirus. The government has also planned to sell intercity train tickets online once the pandemic is over.

In addition, an option of launching counter-to-counter minibus services for the passengers is being under scrutiny, the minister added.
