Dhaka – Awami League, the oldest political party in Bangladesh, will always work for the people’s welfare as it did in the past, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Tuesday.
“It is our commitment to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman that we would always work for the welfare of the people,” Hasina, also the chief of ruling Awami League party, said during an unscheduled discussion in parliament marking the 71st founding anniversary of the party.
The party was founded on this day in 1949 at a meeting in Dhaka’s Rose Garden aiming at self-determination of the people in this part of thw world. Bangladesh was part of Pakistan at that time.
The ruling party chalked out limited programme to celebrate its founding anniversary, mostly through the virtual platform because of the global pandemic of novel coronavirus that also killed more than 1500 people in Bangladesh and infected over 100,000 others.
On the AL’s founding anniversary, Hasina who has been serving the country as Prime minister for three consecutive tenures since 2009, vowed to turn Bangladesh in to prosperous country as her slain father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had dreamt.
She said Bangabandhu is no more within us physically but he is in the mind of all Bangalis as his desire to reach Bangladesh in a dignified position in the world will be fulfilled.
“We will have to work for fulfilling the aspiration of the Father of the Nation,” she vowed. Bangabandhu was one of the founders of the party.
The Awami League has been working for the welfare of the people since its formation, which ushered the hope centuries after defeat of the Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah at Palashi Mango Orchard on June 23 of 1757.
The AL formed the first independent government of Bangladesh on April 10 in 1971 with making Bangabandhu its maiden President, Syed Nazrul Islam as first Vice-President and Tajuddin Ahmed as the first Prime Minister of the country. The government in exile took oath on April 17 the same year at Mujibnagar in Meherpur, a part of the Palashi Mango Orchard.
Hasina said that it was the Awami League which gives something to the people whenever it comes to power.
She went on saying that the leaders and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Juba League, Swechchhasebak League and its other front and associate bodies have been currently working round the clock to reach the relief materials to every doorstep and joining the funeral (of COVID-19 patients) and thus doing everything.
