Dhaka – Bangladesh on Thursday reported the highest 2,029 cases of novel coronavirus in a day raising the total number of Covid-19 patient to 40,321, health officials said.

The single-day infections were reported barely a day after the government decided to relax some of the measures taken nine weeks ago to stem the spread of the virus.

The fresh cases were diagnosed from among a total of 9,310 samples tested in the last 24 hours at 49 authorized labs in Dhaka and elsewhere in Bangladesh, according to Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the government’s health services department.

She said 15 more patients died during the period, making the death toll to 559. With 500 more patients recovering, the total number of patients recovered stands at 8,425.

Among the fresh deaths six were reported in Dhaka city. According to the division-wise data, seven deaths took place in Dhaka division and eight in Chattogram division.

Dhaka city has been considered the worst-affected with 14,997 COVID cases as of Wednesday, according to Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) report. The port city of Chattogram is the hardest-hit with 1,948 cases.

Narayanganj City has 1,948 cases, Cumilla 680, Munshiganj 655, Dhaka with 629, Gazipur 618 positive cases, Cox’s Bazar 470, Noakhali 417 cases, Mymensingh 409 cases and Rangpur 394 cases, according to the data available online.
