Dhaka – The government has gradually been relaxing the nationwide closure to allow the people to manage their livelihoods amid the global pandemic of novel coronavirus that killed tens of thousands and infected millions.
“We are trying to open gradually so that the people can manage their lives,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Sunday while joining donation handing ceremony through video conference at her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka.
As part of the relaxation, a section of shopping complexes were opened on Sunday as per the government decision after reopening factories. The government asked the shop owners to ensure social distancing and other hygiene during the trading of goods.
Hasina said many people, particularly the daily wage earners, have become jobless due to the shutdown which has put a great impact on the country’s economy.
“We know the people are going through a great hardship. So, we have been trying our best to reach foods to everyone’s doorstep to minimize plights,” she said.
The government has given special importance to ensuring food security as part of taking precautionary measures in advance to offset the possible famine the world is likely to face due to the coronavirus outbreak, she added.
Referring to famine predictions by global organisations over the coronavirus pandemic, the prime minister said her government has given importance of ensuring food security.
The prime minister credited to the government’s efforts for the bumper production of (Boro) paddy and requested the countrymen to leave not a single inch of land uncultivated so that the country does not experience any crisis of foods in the days to come.
