Dhaka – Imagine the shock when comes across a photograph of about a dozen dead monkeys lying in a row. But how did they die is what is even more shocking — they were murdered.
Yes, they were poisoned by still unidentified people in southern Bangladeshi town of Madaripur.
Officials said Wednesday that 11 monkeys living in an urban setting were most likely lured to take poison-mixed food.
Forest department official Tapas Kumar Gupta said he was informed by local residents that the monkeys were given cookies mixed with poison on Tuesday by a group of unidentified people.
The monkey family was dead within hours after struggling to breath as the poison took effect, he said adding the monkeys were found near a field of the town, nearly 70 kilometers southwest of the capital Dhaka.
Khalilur Rahman, a local elected representative, said the group used to cause nuisance from time to time and that might have led to this sad incident.
“It is unimaginable that anyone can poison them …. They were our very friendly neighbours,” he said.
Head of the district administration Wahidul Islam has ordered a probe into the killings of these innocent monkeys and pledged to bring those responsible to justice.
None has been arrested so far after the forest department filed a case against unidentified people.
Animal lovers posted angry comments on the social networks after the photographs of the monkeys went viral.
“I will burn those hands which gave poison to these innocent animals if I get them,” wrote Sadikul Islam on his Facebook post.
Punishment for such cruelty amid the Covid-19 pandemic is must, he added.
