Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday appealed to Bangladeshis to face the situation stemming out of global novel coronavirus pandemic with courage.
In a national hook-up ahead of Bangla New Year, she told the panic-gripped people that her government is with them with all its might.
“Please don’t be scared as the fear weakens the prevention capacity of the people. Don’t spread panic … we’ve to face the situation with courage and the government always stays with you,” she said.
As Bangladesh is poised to celebrate Bangla New Year indoors for the first time due to the outbreak of the virus, instead of mass outdoor festivity, Hasina spoke nationwide from the lush green lawn of her official Gonobhaban residence.
Makeshift huts decorated with Bangla heritage were set up in the background of her podium to give a sense of Shubo Nababarsho 1427 or Bengali New Year 1427
Bangladesh is under a closure alongside a nationwide transport lockdown to contain the spread of the virus that has so far infected 803 people and killed 39 others.
Five new deaths and 182 cases of infections were reported in the last 24 hours.
Hasina reminded that the Bengalis are a nation of heroes as they have bravely faced many disasters in the past and won
“We are a victorious nation and we’ll be able to contain the pandemic caused by the lethal virus together Insha Allah (God willing),” she said seeking divine blessings for an early end of the storm.
She also called upon all to be alert against rumours. “It’s not expected during this crisis in any way,” she said.
The prime minister requested the media to highlight the actual information with responsibility on the coronavirus situation.
The nation awaits a sunny day at the end soon after the current dark hours, she hoped.
