A suspected pirate killed in Khulna ‘shootouts’

Khulna – A suspected pirate was gunned down in a gunfight between lawmen and a gang in south-western Bangladeshi district of Khulna, said officials on Friday.

The gun battle occurred at Phultala in Koyra sub-district on Friday morning, leaving Abu Bakar Sardar alias Bakkar, 39, the ringleader of ‘Saizza Bahini’ killed, said an official of Rapid Action Battalion.

The crime-busting battalion launched a drive in the area about 8am to capture the members of the pirate gang, said Rafiqul Islam, local commanding officer of RAB.

Sensing the presence of the battalion members, the bandits opened fire on the lawmen, prompting them to retaliate, said the officer, adding that Abu Bakar was killed on the scene.

The security forces seized one gun, one rifle, two sharp weapons and 10 cartridges from the spot.

The body of the ringleader was kept at Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue.
