Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced a 5000-crore-taka package to save the workers at export oriented industries hard hit by the impact of the global pandemic of novel coronavirus.
“The fund will be used only for the allowances and salary of the workers during the crisis,” the Prime Minister said in a nationwide televised speech, in which she outlined other measures to save her people from the outbreak.
She also announced free food and financial aid for the poorest sections of the population.
The virus, first appeared in the Chinse city of Wuhan in December and wreaked havoc in other parts of the world, was detected on March 8 three Bangladeshi nationals. The virus so far killed five people and infected 39 in the South Asian country and forced the government to restrict people’s movements to slow its spread.
Considering the impact on industries, Hasina said her government has taken all necessary measures to face the crisis. Beside the financial package for the export sector, she said the central bank has announced not to declare the investors loan defaulter until June.
The Prime Minister urged the well-off section of the society to extend their hands for supporting the lower income group, who is feared to be hard hit by the pandemic-triggered lockdowns.
“We have to stand by them those who lost their works,” she said reiterating that those people would be assisted through the “return to my home” scheme.
Homeless and landless people will be fed for six months, they will also be given homes, and cash incentives. She also offered jobs and homes if anyone want to go the Bhasanchar settlement, an island in the Bay of Bengal where the government has planned to relocate more than 100,000 Rohingya Muslims.
She also offered a 10 taka per kg rice distribution or free of cost vulnerable group feeding.
The Prime Minister urged the people to remain indoors during the time of difficulty so that the virus cannot spread among the mass people. Hasina thanked the medical professionals and the armed forces for extending courageous support in the time of difficulty.
