Dhaka – Ruling Bangladesh Awami League party has cancelled all its events chalked out for the national and independence day celebration on March 26 amid the global pandemic of novel coronavirus.
“All events scheduled for the national and independence day celebration have been cancelled from the central to grassroots because of the global pandemic,” said Obairul Quader, secretary general of the party.
Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridge Minister, said the government will shut movement of busses on all routes if necessary.
“But we can’t do anything avoiding the reality,” he told reporters at his Bangladesh Secretariat office, adding that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ready to do everything possible to contain spread of the virus.
“We may have deficit in equipment necessary for fighting the coronavirus, but it will be not true that we have nothing at this moment,” he said. The government has taken measures to collect that equipment.
The minister urged the local government representatives to create awareness among the people to remain safe at the time of global outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
“Please let us know if you come across any information related to the new coronavirus infection in your localities,” he said. The minister assured that the government has no shortage of food in the country.
