Dhaka – Hundreds of shanties have been burned after a fire broke out at a slum in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka , firefighters said on Wednesday.
Firefighters from the state-run Fire Service and Civil Dfence department rushed to the scene soon after the fire broke out at the Rupnagar slum at about 9.30 am. More fire-fighting units joined the effort to douse the flame, said Rasel Sikder, an on-duty officer at the department.
Television footage show the cloud of smoke in the sky and the flame going up even two hours after the fire broke out. The firefighters could not ascertain the reason behind the accident.
No casualty was reported immediately.
Local residents said at least 50,000 low income group of people have been living in the slum.
