Barisal – The authorities have launched an investigation into alleged torture and chaining of minor boys in a state-run center rehabilitating poor and destitute children in the southern city, officials said on Tuesday.
Deputy Director of district social service department Al Mamun Talukder said a three-member panel was assigned to investigate the allegation and report back in three days.
The panel was formed after a video, which showed two children chained on the premises of Sheikh Russel Child Training and Rehabilitation Center of the city, went viral on social media and subsequently picked up by local media about the abuses in the center.
After being abused, one of the two children was reportedly fled the centre last month.
It was also reported that 15 employees of the centre also force the children to work for them despite the fact that the centre was supposed to take a good care of the poor children.
The centre, established in 2012 on a four-storey rented building in Barisal’s Rupatoli neighbourhood, accommodate 76 minor boys in one portion and 86 minor girls to rehabilitate them under the social service department of the government.
The facility has hardly any amenities like amusements, sports and cultural activities to motivate the children.
