Dhaka – The suspect arrested in connection with raping multiple victims, including a Dhaka University student whose case sparked widespread protest in Dhaka and elsewhere, was remanded in custody, police said.

The 30-year old suspect, identified as Majnu, was presented before the court where the investigators plead for 10 days of custodial interrogation, officer Mashiur Rahman told reporters.

The man was arrested in Dhaka’s Shewra area on Wednesday by the Rapid Action Battalion of the police and brought before journalists at a news conference at the RAB office.

Thousands of Dhaka University students attended a campus protest on Monday after a second-year student was raped in the city’s Kurmitola neighbourhood the evening before.

The suspect was tracked using the victim’s lost mobile phone, which was eventually took away by the suspect and later sold to a person in his locality, and apprehended him in Shewra early on Wednesday.

The RAB officials said that the victim has identified the suspect.

The girl was grabbed by an unknown man from behind minutes after she got off a bus at Kurmitola bus stop to go to a friend’s home. She was taken to an isolated area and reaped.

The investigators said that the suspect is a serial rapist and drug addict and he tried to kill the Dhaka University student after raping her.

He had raped street beggars and disabled women near the same place, a RAB officer said on Wednesday according to the suspect’s confession.

The rape incident sparked protests on Dhaka University campus. The protest has been continued for the third day on Thursday as the victim was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Several hundred students of the university attended rallies organised by different organizations on the campus demanding exemplary punishment of the rapist. They also asked the authorities to ensure a city safe for the women.
