Dhaka – Hundreds of students of Dhaka University on Tuesday stood hand in hand on the campus to stage human chain protest to demand arrest of the rapist of a fellow female student of the university.
A second-year student of the university was raped by an unknown man in Dhaka’s Kurmitola neighbourhood on Sunday night prompting protest on the campus. The demonstrators on the second day of protest demanded immediate arrest of the rapist.
They want death for the rapist and shouted slogan “Hang the rapist”. Many of the male and female students were seen carrying placard with the same slogan. Activists of different student organizations hold rallies on the campus asking the government to ensure Dhaka as safe city for the women.
A group of teachers joined the students’ protest asking for a social change to stop vices like rape and violence on women.
Incidents of rape and violence on women are frequent in Bangladesh.
Non-governmental rights watchdog Ain O Salish Kendra reported rape of at least 1,351 women in the South Asian country between January and November 2019. Sixty-six of them were murdered after rape, the organization said.
People reacted on social media on the rise of rape incidents asking the government to ensure exemplary punishment for the rapists. They also demanded amendment to the existing law, if necessary, with capital punishment for the rapists.
Four students of the Dhaka University began hunger strike to demand immediate arrest of the rapist involved in the latest case. They told reporters that they will continue the protest until the culprits are brought to book.
Meanwhile, police have put the investigation in the rape case on the top as the Inspector General of Police Jabed Patwari instructed the detectives to scale up their effort to capture the accused.
Detective Branch of police have collected evidence from the place of occurrence. They also collected footage of closed circuit camera of the area.
