Closure of evening courses at public universities ordered

Dhaka – The evening courses introduced at public universities on specific subjects in addition to regular study must be shut to maintain standard at higher education.

University Grants Commission, in a directive issued on Wednesday, asked all public universities to shut such courses as what the regulator says it tarnished the image of the educational institutes.

The order came two days after President Abdul Hamid, who is also the chancellor of the universities, criticized evening courses. He also criticized the roles of the university teachers for being remained busy with those auxiliary courses than that of the regular ones.

The university has been turned into a business institution and such courses disrupted overall academic environment, he told a gathering at Dhaka University convocation on Monday.

A press release of the UGC said the commission also directed vice chancellors for discharging their responsibilities.

It asked the authorities to obtain UGC’s approval before opening a new department and position, follow university rules while giving employment and promotion, according to the press statement.
