Dhaka – Police have arrested three suspected Islamist militants who were reportedly plotting subversive activities in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.
A squad of counter-terrorism unit of the police captured Md Abdullah, 24, Shafikul Islam alias Mollaji, 38, and Musatafa Hosen Arif, 25 – all of whom are members of banned militant outfit Jamaatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh – at Gabtoli outskirt of the city, police spokesman Masudur Rahman said/
The suspects were arrested when they were coming to Dhaka from northern part of the country on Wednesday, the spokesman said.
The JMB, a home-grown militant organization, is blamed for many terrorist attacks, including a synchronized attack in 63 out of 64 Bangladeshi districts in October 2005. The group was banned in the aftermath of number of other attacks that included district courts.
Police believe that the members of the group are still active in Bangladesh and are trying to carry out more attacks.
