Dhaka – Rapid Action Battalion on Wednesday arrested leader of a ruling Awami League’s front organization soon after an operation conducted at a ‘casino’ run illegally by the leader in central Dhaka, police said.
The battalion members picked up Khaled Mahmud Bhuiya, organizing secretary of the Jubo League Dhaka south unit, at his residence in Gulshan in the evening. Police said they recovered firearms and bullets from his possession.
Earlier, the lawmen raided the Fakirerpool Young-men’s club, where the illegal casino and bar were being run, and detained 142 people who were allegedly involved in gabling.
RAB spokesman Sarwar Bin Quasem told reporters that the battalion conducted simultaneous raid in Gulshan and Fakirerpool.
The lawmen also confiscated casino boards, alcohol and money worth about 3 million taka from the club.
The raids came barely three days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her anger at a meeting of her ruling Awami League party over the activities of some leaders of the ruling party’s affiliated organizations.
She also warned the leaders of consequences as she maintained zero tolerance on drug and militancy.
Police said a section of people have been running illegal businesses like casino in the city using their influence with ruling quarter.
