Dhaka – Md Shafiqul Islam has taken charge as head of Dhaka Metropolitan Police with a daunting task ahead to handle order and safety of nearly 20 million people amid threats of terrorism, drugs and other forms of crimes in one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
Islam, an immediate boss at Bangladesh’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), is the successor of Md Asaduzzaman Mia, who served as DMP commissioner for more than three years and admitted his shortcomings in handling few issues, especially the chaotic Dhaka streets.
Earlier in August, the Home Ministry announced Islam’s new position in the police and issued a gazette notification to this end.
He served as the chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police since May 16.
Graduated from Mymensingh Agricultural University in 1986, Islam joined in the police service in 1989 as Assistant Superintendent of Police. He served the police department in various capacities since his appointment.
He was promoted to the rank of Additional Inspector General in September 2017
