Dhaka – Nine crew members of a lighter vessel have went missing after the ship sank in the Bay of Bengal, officials said on Thursday.
The vessel, which was also carrying more than 1,000 tons of coal, capsized at the Sandwip channel of the bay when it was approaching towards Sangu gas field, Mahbub Rashid, an official of the Water Transport Cell of Lighter Vessel Association.
The small cargo ship was caught in rough weather while returning to the gas field after loading coal from a mother vessel at the outer anchorage of the Chittagong Port, he said.
Three of a total 12 crew members of the ship named Hera Porbot-8 could be rescued while the rest remained missing, the official said adding that the rescue operation has become difficult as the sea remain rough.
Members of the Coast Guard and the Navy have started a search operation.
