Key suspect in Rifat murder killed in ‘crossfire’

Dhaka – The prime suspect of a grisly murder in southern Barguan district was killed in an armed encounter with the law enforcement agency on Tuesday, police said.

The reported gunfight occurred between the police and the gang at a village in Purakata, a few kilometers east of the district headquarters, leaving Sabbir Hossain Nayan who used to identify himself as Nayan Bond killed on the scene.

Nayan and his accomplishes last week chopped a 25-year old young-man, Rifat Sharif, in front of his wife in the broad daylight – video footage of which went viral on social media last week and created a social outcry across Bangladesh.

District police chief Maruf Hossain said the criminals fired their guns sensing presence of the police when they raided a village in search of the accused in the murder of Rifat.

The lawmen retaliated with bullets, he said adding that the gun battle lasted for few minutes as most of the members of the gang managed to flee the scene. Later, police found the body of Nayan lying on the ground along with a pistol, a bullet and few locally made firearms.

The district police launched a drive soon after the murder created an outcry and the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, ordered immediate arrest of the accused.

The police officer said that four of his colleagues who joined the raid were wounded and given treatment at a hospital.

Rifat Sharif

Police arrested five persons in connection with the murder of Rifat Sharif. Of them two confessed to their crimes as they were remanded in custody.

On Wednesday morning, members of the gang carried out the attack on Rifat Sharif when he along with his wife was crossing the Barguan Government College area. A video footage on the social media showed the goons chopped bare-handed Sharif one after another while his wife tried to prevent the assailants from attacking Sharif.
