Dhaka – At least four pirates have been killed in a gun-battle with Rapid Action Battalion in the Sundarbans mangrove forest in south-western Bangladeshi district of Khulna, police said on Wednesday.
Battalion officer Tajul Islam said the gun battle began early hours of the day as the RAB launched an anti-pirate raid in the forest’s Chandpai range area. The deceased belong to a notorious gang led by one Hasan in the forest, he added.
The officer said the members of the gang fired their guns sensing presence of members of the law enforcement agencies at around midnight when the RAB launched the drive. The battalion members retaliated with bullets for nearly half hour, leaving four of the gang members, including the gang leader, dead on the scene.
Some of the gang members are believed to have fled the scene, Islam said adding that the lawmen found firearms and ammunitions abandoned by the pirates.
The identity of three pirates could not be determined.
The pirates have been active in the Sundarbans mangrove forest for long time. They used to abduct the fishermen and demanded ransom.
